Can you replace Fruits and vegetables with Vitamin supplements?
Can you take vitamin supplements instead of eating fruits and vegetables, and be just as healthy?
Why, or why not?
It can only replace the major (chemical) nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and some acids. It certainly won’t be complete, but better than nothing if you are having trouble getting and/or eating fresh fruits and vegetables. It doesn’t replace the fiber. Fiber itself is important as an aid to digestion, a filler (which helps you to keep from eating too much at one sitting), and as a cancer preventative. The overall importance of fruits and vegetables in a diet is shown by the (inverted) food pyramid. It needs to be a major, in fact the second largest, part of a healthy diet.
Bottom line: nutritional supplements are ONLY supplements. For optimum results, you need to eat right.
