I Love Herb Kits! Just Look at the Fun Names the Kits Have

You are invited to visit my herb garden website to see photos of herbs and savor lots more information on growing and using your own herbs. You’ll also find my very favorite pasta recipe there – my secret version of pasta putanesca that always gets rave reviews! This recipe features a special ingredient that most cooks would never think to include.

Today we’ll learn more about purchasing and using herb kits to start an herb garden.

When starting your herb garden from a kit, remember that you will more than likely need to transplant your herbs into larger containers or your in-ground garden as they grow.

As you determine which kit or kits to purchase, keep in mind that herb kits come in so many varieties. You can select kits specifically for teas, culinary or medicinal uses. You can also purchase kits for indoor or outdoor use. Herb kits make ideal gifts.

As more and more homeowners decide to use fresh as opposed to dried herbs, both indoor and outdoor herb gardening has become a growing trend. It’s also reassuring to think of the cost savings when growing your own fresh herbs, versus buying them at the local market. Other benefits include the joy of gardening, which is both relaxing and even therapeutic and being a part of a growing trend. Many Americans now enjoy the thrill of growing and harvesting their own herbs.

Included in the benefits of growing herbs are dressing up your home or yard with living plants and eating your own hand-picked, natural herbs. There is nothing like knowing that your herbs have been grown in clean, perhaps organic, soil without the use of harsh chemicals.

Are you a beginner? Not to worry. Herb kits are wonderful for almost anyone, whether expert or beginner. Kits can be found with seeds for one, two, three or even more different herbs. You may even want to have others in the family join you in selecting your favorite kits. This can be a fun activity for the entire group.

Can’t find the herb kit you are looking for locally? Look for exciting online options. Check out the internet for several companies offering terrific variety. You can find such wonderful sounding names for the kits as ‘Indian Spice Garden’, ‘Culinary Herb Garden’, ‘French Country Herb Trio’, ‘Wintergreen in a Pail’ and many more. When ordering online, you will usually need to cover shipping costs.

As a ‘health nut’, I have a preference for organic kits. One such kit has the intriguing name of ‘Organic Herb Garden Trio Tuscany Edition’ and comes with three eco-friendly natural pots and saucers (made from rice hulls), compressed soil wafers, certified organic seeds, wood plant markers and instructions. According to the company’s marketing materials, it contains everything you need to start a mouthwatering herb garden and the rice hull pots are compostable and will last for up to three years with normal use.

The specific herbs you are planting will determine the time of year that you plant.

When starting from a kit, you can start your herb garden right in your kitchen. The kitchen windowsill is no doubt the best location for indoor herbs and this location gives your kitchen visual appeal and glorious scents! Many kits come with a miniature container, or ‘greenhouse’ that provides the proper climate for fast herb growth and propagation. You can have herb plants in just a few weeks.

If you choose to grow your seedlings indoors, just make sure that they have adequate sunlight. If your indoor space isn’t blessed with lots of sunlight, you will need to purchase ‘grow lights’ that sit on the table or countertop.
